Fed: Govt should hold plebiscite on Iraq: Brown
Australian Greens Senator BOB BROWN says the federal government should test its positionon a war with Iraq by holding a plebiscite.
Senator BROWN says the government could also bring forward the federal election totest its stance following the strong anti-war protests held around the country in recentdays.
He's told ABC television Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD is out of touch and arrogant.
He says Mr HOWARD needs to put down the phone from the White House and take up thephone from the Australian people.
Senator BROWN says the PM should have sent out a voting slip with the fridge magnetsin the terrorism alert kits.
Australia has held three plebiscites: two during World War One for the introductionof conscription, and another in the 1970s over the choice of the national anthem.
There are reports today the government is considering an early election to push throughthe full sale of Telstra.
Senator BROWN says the prospect of war against Iraq is far more important than thesale of Telstra.
